Meat and seafood play an important role in the daily menu of the HCG Diet since these foods are high in protein and protein burns fat. But what if you're a vegetarian? Back when Dr. Simeons worked with the HCG Diet Protocol, about 60 years ago, there weren't many options. In fact, Dr. Simeons only allowed three substitutions, 250 ml (1/4 liter) skim milk, 100 grams of non-fat cottage cheese, or one whole egg plus 3 additional egg whites. His experience showed that vegetarians that ate these substitutions lost weight significantly slower than non-vegetarians who were following the basic protocol.
Keeping this in mind and taking into consideration the availability of new vegetarian products on the market today, we have done some experimenting of our own with significant success, although the weight loss results are still not quite the same for vegetarians overall as for participants who follow the original protocol. Based on the original protocol, the following nutritional guidelines are being used to find vegetarian/vegan alternatives.
HCG Alternative Nutritional Guidelines for Vegetarians
Calories: 80 - 130 (The lower the better.)
Carbs: 0g - 9g (The lower the better.)
Sugars: 0g - 1g (The lower the better.)
Fat: 0g - 6g (The lower the better.)
Protein: 8g - 25g (The higher the better.)
The nutritional facts (calories, carbohydrates, sugar, fat, and protein) on the label of specific food products/brands are analyzed to see if the values fall in the above nutritional ranges to determine if the food item is a suitable substitute for the very low calorie phase of the HCG Protocol.
